The Kennet and Avon Canal linked London with Bristol by water, accelerating trade and industry across the region. Towns such as Reading, Newbury and Bradford-on-Avon expanded into manufacturing and commercial centres, while the arrival of the Great Western Railway under Isambard Kingdom Brunel transformed the corridor into one of the principal arteries of the Industrial Revolution.

What had once carried pilgrims and packhorses now carried coal, goods, ideas and people at unprecedented speed, binding west and east into a single modern economy.
